Whatsapp etiquette

Hi - we have a choir WhatsApp group for members where we can share information as well as other bits of news from within our group - sometimes funny anecdotes or videos etc . If a member decides not to sing and pay membership for one term (quite a few stop coming in summer term) they are removed from the WhatsApp group.  Just wondered if anyone else does this and whether it’s ok from a data protection perspective? Mostly the folk who’ve been removed don’t mind (they are added again when they rejoin) but sometimes a singer will not be happy at being removed.

I can’t imagine there’s a data protection issue. If you’ve made it clear somewhere that membership of the WhatsApp group is for current members only, they cant expect to stay in it when they drop their membership.

FWIW, we remove members who aren’t current. If they rejoin then we have their GDPR form already so if they want they can rejoin.

The more fun issue with WA groups seems to me to be how you editorially manage it. We’ve told them all not to use it to say they aren’t coming tonight but tell us direct. It just encourages those who think it’s ok to have a night off because they’re packing to go on holiday on Saturday or it’s raining…!!!!
