Audio recordings
Some of my community choir have requested that an audio recording is made of our concert next week. This is purely for our own use, to share on our WhatsApp group, so that we can hear what we sound like as a choir and hopefully learn from it. Can anyone help me with the legalities of making an audio recording (without filming)? Do I need to have all the singers' permission? What about copyright for the pieces we are singing?
Any help welcome!
Thank you very much.

As far as I know, in the UK there's no need to get your singers' permission to make an audio recording. If you're in a public space, you don't need to get permission to take photos or video either, but it's often courteous to do so. The main issue is copyright, but to be honest, if you're just going to share it among yourselves, it's vanishingly unlikely that any copyright holder would ever get wind of it, let alone care.
If I were you, I'd just give the choir an instruction not to distribute the material outside the group and leave it at that.
Thank you very much, Victoria - your post is very helpful and reassuring.
